As part of our Community Design Works, we partnered with the town of Cottage City and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to elevate Cottage City’s culture and history and reimagine the Moyer’s Mill Community Park by listening to the community’s wants and needs.
During the process, the town’s commission M-NCPPC, and NDC held several meetings to review feedback and develop short term and long term design options that reflect the community aspirations.
The first engagement NDC executed for the Cottage City Community Park project was at the Day of the Dead celebration in October of 2021. Many children participated in the “reimagine your community park” drawing activity. The kids were enthusiastic about adding more color and more play equipment to the park!
NDC attended the Cottage City Earth Day event in April 2022 to understand park access and connection ideas from the community. NDC also shared design ideas for different park spaces and amenities.
NDC attended the Cottage City Day event in August 2022 to share three conceptual park plans looking at short term vs. long term interventions, and multiple drawing activities for the community to brainstorm public art and signage ideas for the park.
Two volunteers went above and beyond through this project and showed true dedication and teamwork: Kumi Wickramanayaka, Project Architect at Wiencek + Associates Architects + Planners, Inc., and Lauren Gray, landscape designer at AMT Engineering. Together, they won our Prince George's County Volunteer of the Year award for 2022.
