Women have led NDC for most of our organization’s history. We want to take a moment to thank them, in particular, two women retiring from amazing careers.

Ellen Janes who recently retired after 10 years of leadership at Central Baltimore Partnership, served as executive director of the Neighborhood Design Center shortly after 1989 until 1995. Carol Gilbert, Maryland Dept. of Housing Assistant Secretary, was the Neighborhood Design Center’s executive director from 1995 to 2000.

These women showed up for our communities, built relationships with residents, and shaped what equitable development actually looks like on the ground.

This month, we’re honoring that legacy and the women who carried it forward.

To Ellen Janes, recently retired after years of transformative leadership — thank you. To Carol Gilbert, whose decades of work at the state level have opened doors for communities across Maryland — congratulations on a well-earned retirement.

We stand on the shoulders of remarkable women.
