the Neighborhood Design Center

For this COmmunity Design Works project, the City of District Heights sought to honor the sacrifice and service of veterans from the city and create a tranquil place for contemplation and gathering. The design team was led by volunteers Kelley Oklesson, Nohely Alvarez, and Kontessa Roebuck. Their concept maximizes the location’s visibility with access from several points along existing walk lines.

The project included:

    • Highly participatory community engagement process

    • Dedicated sculpture space for each military branch

    • 4,800 square feet of pervious paver walkway

    • Low-maintenance landscape of trees and ornamental grasses

    • Plants selected intentionally to bloom for Memorial and Veterans’ Day events

    • 75% native plant palette
