What Co-Design Means at NDC: Our Collaborations From the Past Year

The Vision is Yours Placemaking and Placekeeping Conference 2026 Creative Exchange Conversations where attendees bounced around to different tables with a host and intriguing prompt to discuss.

“Co-design” is not a term you hear often, but it’s been at the core of our work since 1968.

Co-design is community-led. It’s participatory. It’s built on listening, co-creation, and follow-through at every level of the process.

We bring everyone to the table: neighborhood residents, community organizations, funders, government agencies, designers, and planners. We call this our ecosystem.

In Fiscal Year 2025, we partnered with...

3,051 design process participants

302 partner organizations

78 design volunteers

26 schools

485 students

Because when the process is inclusive, the design is better, and the built environment better reflects the local needs, histories, and aspirations of the people who live there.
