Exploring the Role of Light During Our Valentine’s Day Community Light Walk

Slide 1 of 5

Through our Community Light Walks, we’ve invited community members to explore the role of light in shaping memories, enhancing public spaces, and fostering connection.

On our latest walk, participants:

    • Learned about Baltimore’s streetlight history from historian Mo Speller’s research.

    • Discovered hidden art in Graffiti Alley with flashlights.

    • Created “light drawings” inspired by Blue Light Junction’s Sparkling Indigo installation.

    • Explored public art and Inviting Light sites, sparking curiosity and conversations about their significance.

These walks bring new perspectives to our nighttime environments and celebrate the power of light to transform spaces.

Stay tuned for more walks as the weather warms up in 2025!

About the Project

We are thrilled to be part of the collaborative team behind “Inviting Light,” an innovative public art project that has garnered national recognition by making Baltimore one of eight cities to receive $1 million through the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge.

Curated by Baltimore’s own Derrick Adams and produced by the Central Baltimore Partnership, Baltimore City Mayor’s Office, and NDC, “Inviting Light” will bring five site-specific temporary public art installations and five site activations by artists to Central Baltimore.

A year of scheduled events and curated arts programming for the community will follow. “Inviting Light” builds upon the extensive research and insights gathered from Signal Station North, NDC’s district lighting plan and public space initiative for Central Baltimore.

We are excited to continue this work, which aims to foster a vibrant and equitable public space in Central Baltimore that resonates with the community’s values and aspirations.
