The Trash Dash — Anacostia River Cleanup Competition

In the joyful spirit of service and friendly competition, Neighborhood Design Center hosted the “Trash Dash,” a team River Cleanup Contest on March 27, 2022.

It might have been cold but that didn’t stop the amazing team that came to our inaugural Trash Dash at Bladensburg Waterfront Park. We had over 60 people, raised over $6,000 and prevented over a TON of garbage (55 bags!) from polluting the Anacostia Watershed!

Clean and Compete!

Gather a team of 6-10 people and see how much watershed cleaning you can do in 1 hour — competitively… and in costumes, of course!

Winners get a handmade trophy, swag, admiration, and potentially a few disgruntled glances from your defeated opponents. We’ll be sure to fuel up beforehand with pizza and refreshments while listening to music in a family-friendly vibe.

Here’s How it Works

Step 1:

Collect your team!

Could be a group of work buddies, friends, family, neighbors, or industry partners. Pick a group name, theme, and start pondering stellar costume
ideas.

Step 2:

Register your team here!

That’ll allow you to legitimize your team’s presence, set up your team page, and see how you stack up against the competition over time.  Don’t have a time but want to be a part of the competition? Email us.

Step 3:

Fundraise!
Ask everyone in your network to show your team some love by supporting Neighborhood Design Center’s community design work. ‘Most Funds Raised’ is a prize-winning category, so your team will want to be on top!

Step 4:

Show Up and Show Off!

Throw on your costumes and come prepared to make a tangible difference in the
health and appearance of a local watershed. When you arrive, we’ll all gather, fuel up with light fare, and practice some friendly ‘trash’ talk to get started!

Step 5:

Win, Create, and Celebrate!

The competition begins - most bags of trash collected wins! That means clean with gumption! And did we mention we’ll be making handmade trophies using reclaimed rubbish? How sustainable? We’ll have the option of canoes available for the brave to aid with collecting trash in the river.
