We recently visited the historic Tavern in North Brentwood with our fantastic volunteer team Alexis Wilson and Christy Matthew who are working on ideas for the interior design for this historical community space.
Originally constructed in 1912 the structure was the first commercial building in North Brentwood, the first incorporated African American Community in Prince George’s County. Originally a grocery store and then a lively tavern run by Marie ’Sis” Walls, it became a venue for performers such as Pearl Bailey and Duke Ellington who used to drop in after performing at the Howard Theatre in DC. After Sis’s closed in 1970 the building housed Baby Dee’s guest club and a barbers shop but since the mid 90’s it has been empty and fell into disrepair.
We are excited to be working with the Town of North Brentwood and other stakeholders to bring Sis’s Tavern back to life!
