Beyond Nutrition — The Significance of Urban Farms

Urban farming has long been upheld as a practical solution to food deserts and food insecurity, providing fresh produce to communities that often lack access to nutritious options.

Yet the true significance of urban farms extends far beyond their role in providing nutrition. These green spaces play a powerful role in placemaking in the communities they serve, becoming hubs of social interaction, cultural exchange, and environmental education.

Their role in creating meaningful places that strengthen and sustain communities is far greater than the amount of food they produce.

At Placemaking Week, one of our mobile workshops delves deeper into urban farming as a form of reparative art. This workshop explores how community-based cultivation practices can alleviate systemic harms and injustices, highlighting the powerful cultural contributions of urban farming to community healing and resilience.
